Can North America Make This Tube?

We built two real EN 10305 and JIS G 3445 requirements and are putting them to every North American mill that might plausibly produce them. This page is the investigation's home: the question, the method, the requirements themselves, and — as responses arrive — the answers.

The print is metric. That is the first problem.

It arrived the way these things always arrive — attached to a localization directive, flagged urgent, stamped with a European standard the buyer has seen a hundred times and sourced domestically never: EN 10305-2, grade E355, stress-relieved, a welded cold-drawn hydraulic tube with tolerances that make a structural mill laugh and walls measured in millimeters that make an American slitter sigh. For years the answer was simple: the tube came from Europe, or from a Japanese mill via a trading company, and nobody asked hard questions. Then the questions got expensive. Since June 2025, imported steel tube has entered the United States under a 50 percent Section 232 tariff — Canada and Mexico included — and cold-drawn mechanical tubing from Germany, Italy, India, China, Korea, and Switzerland carries antidumping duties stacked on top. The status quo did not become impossible. It became a line item too large to ignore.

So the buyer does what buyers do: searches. "EN 10305 tube supplier USA." "Who makes EN 10305 tubing in USA." "STKM13A equivalent." We ran those searches ourselves, on dated record (August 8, 2026), and here is what the internet offers a North American sourcing manager: exporter pages from India and China, a paywalled grade database, a reseller catalog, and not one North American manufacturing answer. The visible metric-tube market in the United States is, by its own storefronts' description, an import business. The largest metric-stock distributor calls itself exactly that. Another describes itself, plainly and honestly, as "an independent importer."

And yet. In our catalogue of thirty-six North American tube producers, processors, and distributors — every company's own current pages, read and dated — exactly one mill explicitly advertises production to both EN 10305-2 and JIS G 3445 on its current product page. A Missouri mill calls itself one of the few in the U.S. rolling metric tube, twenty to four hundred millimeters, in quantities smaller than foreign mills will entertain. An Ohio precision mill holds the EU's Pressure Equipment Directive certification and says nothing about EN tube at all. Somewhere between "nobody makes this here" and "of course we can make that" is the truth — and public information cannot reach it.

So we stopped reading websites. We built two complete requirements, and we are sending identical RFQs to every plausible North American route. The clock is running.


The two requirements

Requirement 1 — hydraulic precision tube (European print). Welded cold-drawn tube per EN 10305-2 · grade E355 · delivery condition +SR (stress-relieved) · Ø40,0 × 4,0 mm · six-metre lengths · inspection certificate 3.1 per EN 10204 · 25,000 pieces/year in monthly releases · automotive-adjacent hydraulics duty.

Requirement 2 — automotive structural tube (Japanese print). Carbon steel tube for machine structure per JIS G 3445:2016 · STKM13A −E−C (electric-resistance-welded, cold-finished) · Ø25,4 × 2,0 mm · tolerance Division 2 per Table 5 · inner and outer weld bead removed (the standard's default) · inspection document per JIS G 0415, 5.1 · 60,000 pieces/year in monthly releases · seating-class structural duty.

These are complete, engineering-realistic requirements — the kind that sit on real desks. Every recipient gets the same specification, the same quantity scenarios, and the same response window.

What we already know (labeled and dated)

  • The search vacuum is real. Fifteen high-intent queries sampled August 8, 2026: zero North American manufacturing answers on the EN/JIS cluster. (PTJ observation, dated record.)
  • One explicit claimant. One US mill's current product page states its drawn-over-mandrel tube is "typically produced to" ASTM A513 Type 5 "or European standard EN 10305-2," and lists JIS G 3445 −E−C — the only such explicit claim we found among thirty-six companies.   • Domestic metric claims exist beyond it — published metric size ranges at a small number of mills. (Company-published capability; verification calls underway.)
  • The storefronts are importers — the visible US metric-tube retail layer self-describes as importing and distribution. (Self-declarations, dated.)
  • The standards themselves disagree in ways that matter. One example from the primary texts: JIS G 3445 requires inner and outer ERW weld beads removed by default; ASTM A500 states welded tubing "is normally furnished without removal of the inside flash." Opposite defaults — a localization detail that must be written on the order. (JIS G 3445:2016, clause 4 d); ASTM A500/A500M-23, Note 2.)
  • The tariff wall is primary-sourced. 50% Section 232 on base tube from nearly every origin including Canada and Mexico; antidumping/countervailing orders on cold-drawn mechanical tubing from six countries, continued to at least 2029; light-walled rectangular tube orders maintained by ITC vote on August 4, 2026. Why no company names yet

Our methodology (see /methodology) gives every company we intend to name the exact proposed language and ten business days to respond before publication. Those notices are out. The labeled capability map — who claims it, who confirms it, who declines, who went silent — publishes when the windows close. We do not publish that a company cannot make something, ever; absence of evidence gets labeled as exactly that.

What happens next

  • Verification round: direct confirmation calls with twenty-five producers and processors. (Underway.)
  • The RFQ test: identical requirements to 8–12 plausible routes; responses logged — quoted, conditional, declined, silent.
  • Results: published here with every response characterized, right-of-reply honored, and the two requirements' fates traced to the end: a viable domestic route, a qualified near-miss, or a documented wall.
  • Updates: semiannual re-RFQ thereafter. This page is permanent.
